Isham Watson was a son of Barnabas Watson and his wife Elizabeth Smith, of Marion County, South Carolina. His maternal grandfather was John Smith (d. 1802).

On 15 Feb. 1810, Isham married Mary Hayes (1792-1862). She was a daughter of John Hayes and his wife Ann Berry. Isham and Mary had fourteen children:
