Marcus Monroe Barnard was born November 14, 1837, in Henry Co., Tennessee. He was the third child of George Washington and Elizabeth Barnard who married in 1834. The family moved to Arkansas in 1847-48.

He later joined the Union Army at Clarksville on October 1, 1863, and served in Company C, 2nd Arkansas Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged August 8, 1865, at Clarksville.

Marcus married Harriett Elvira (Elvy) Coner Aydelott in March 1862. They were the parents of six children: James Lafayette "Gee" Barnard, born 1864; Robert Montgomery "Little Bob" Barnard, born 24 February, 1871; William Irvin Barnard, born 23 July 1873; Laura Amer Barnard, born 1878; Sarah Ellen, born 1881; John M., born 1884.
