Marcus Monroe Barnard was born November 14, 1837, in Henry Co., Tennessee. He was the third child of George Washington and Elizabeth Barnard who married in 1834. The family moved to Arkansas in 1847-48.
At Charleston on June 25, 1862, Marcus joined the Confederacy as a private in Company E, 35th Arkansas Infantry. He became disenchanted with the living conditions, the Confederate Cause and concern for his family. He deserted on September 10, 1863, and walked all the way home, being careful not to get caught. He later joined the Union Army at Clarksville on October 1, 1863, and served in Company C, 2nd Arkansas Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged August 8, 1865, at Clarksville.
Marcus married Harriett Elvira (Elvy) Coner Aydelott in March 1862. They were the parents of six children: James Lafayette "Gee" Barnard, born 1864; Robert Montgomery "Little Bob" Barnard, born 24 February, 1871; William Irvin Barnard, born 23 July 1873; Laura Amer Barnard, born 1878; Sarah Ellen, born 1881; John M., born 1884.
Marcus died September 12, 1903 and Harriett died in June 1919. They are buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
