Obituary from The Bossier Banner:

Miss Mattie Oneal [sic]

Miss Mattie Oneal, daughter of B.F. and Jennie Steele Oneal, was born in Bellevue, La., May 6, 1877, and died in Benton, September 5, 1900.

It seems but yesterday that we met this sweet young girl in the full enjoyment of life and health and it is indeed hard to realize that today she is sleeping beneath the sod in Bellevue cemetery. Only a little over a year ago death robbed this home of the loving Christian mother, and now this treasure, who so nearly filled that mother's place, has been removed, but the "jewel" that shone so brightly among us is shining far more beautiful in the home above, leaving a memory so strongly outlined as to never be effaced. She was a consistent Christian of bright, cheerful disposition, amiable and lovely. Her devotion to duty has been the comment of many and no doubt the admiration of angels.

Mattie is gone. The sound of that sweet voice that ever touched the tenderest chords in our bosom, is hushed forever. The sunshine of her soul-lit eyes and the loving kiss of welcome from her dear warm lips shall gladen our hearts no more. She is dead. No sleep so calm, so beautiful, so free from trace of pain so fair to look upon. As she lay in her soft white coffin, shrouded in pure white, she seemed indeed a creature fresh from the hand of God, waiting for the breath of life and not one who had lived and suffered death.

"There is no death, an angel form
Walks o'er the earth with silent tread.
He bears our best loved ones away
And then we call them dead"

May the Lord bind up the bleeding hearts of the loved ones who remain. Let me say to them, she is just out of sight and when the clouds of life are dispelled with us, we shall see her again. She is
"Safe with the angels, whiter than snow,
Watching for dear ones, waiting below."
