Hobie grew up on an orange plantation in Ojai, California, with brothers Jerome Jr. and Hawley. He married Mary Louise Walker and was father to Jerri Lea, Katherine Louise, Nancy Ann, Tanya Zue, and Bart Walker Houck. Hobie worked on highway construction and had retired to Central Point.
