Son of Adolph Bauer and Alma Stahl, Elgin enlisted in the United States Army December 10, 1940 in Kerr County, Texas, Two of his brothers also served their country during World War II.
Bauer went ashore at Normandy on D-Day plus (June 7, 1944) where he was wounded in his left ankle and spent five months in the hospital. He rejoined his unit in the 2nd Infantry Division, as a radio operator and fought in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central European campaigns.
PFC Bauer was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the European and Middle east Campaign ribbon with
with five battle stars, American Defense Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge and the Presidential unit citation awarded to his unit for gallantry for their participation in the Normandy Invasion.
He was honorably discharged in San Antonio, Texas in August 1945 with the rank of Private First Class (PFC)
