Kurt "Pops" Bauer passed away at Seton Hospital Monday evening, December 14th with close friends at his side. He was born on April 21, 1933 in Stonewall, Texas. Kurt worked for 30+ years for McClaine Company as a route delivery person. As a young man, he served his country with honors in the Air Force as a young man. Although he had the where withal to live elsewhere, he lived by choice for over 16 years at South Austin Market Place transitional housing on Ben White Blvd. in South Austin where he was a sort of grandpa figure to those coming and going through facility. Along with other long time residents and staff, Kurt became part of an eclectic extended family. He was a feature sitting next to the parrot aviary in the courtyard with his fly swatter where he watched over the activities of the complex and enjoyed giving the big birds their special treats. He enjoyed other simple pleasures including frequent trips with friends to the Catfish Parlour and Vic's BarBQ. Although he lived in the city, he also had a country boy's heart and enjoyed his weekend rides to his ranch in Stonewall to check on the cattle that roamed there. This quiet polite man will be missed by his adoptive family at South Austin Market Place, his many other friends, and his family. We're all going to miss joshing with you, Kurt, and if there are any flies in heaven they better watch out because you are one definitely deadly dude with a swatter, Pops.
Kurt was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Alma Stahl Bauer and four brothers. He is survived by one brother, Warner of Stonewall, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kurt's friends and family want to thank the staff at the ICU at Seton Hospital who worked tirelessly on Kurt's behalf during his last weeks. Their compassionate and skilled care was a blessing.
A memorial service celebrating Kurt's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Iglesia Bautista Betania, 1117 Tillery, Austin, Texas.
