In Memoriam
---Mrs. Magdelena Smeltzer Long, wife of James Long, of Millard, Mo., departed this life August 12, 1884, aged 82 years, 10 months and 12 days. She was the mother of eight children, seven of whom are still living. Forty-one grand children and seven great grand children are left behind her.
---Her first husband, Mr. Bush, only lived about thirteen years. After eight years of widowhood with her six children, she married Mr. Long forty years ago, or in 1844.
---In early life she was a member of the Lutheran church. After her second marriage she, with her husband, joined the Presbyterian church, in whose communion she remained until her demise.
---As she grew in years she grew also in a softened and mellow Christian character. She loved the good, the Bible and prayer and Christian conversation and Christian people and the house of God, where her feet were accustomed to resort when she was able to go anywhere.
---For twelve years she had been more or less of an invalid, at times suffering untold discomfort and pain, but she bore all with uncomplaining patience and Christian resignation.
---For several years her pastor, who preached but a square distant from her home on Sabbath each month, was fully expected to spend at least a part of that Sabbath afternoon in her house and at every such call to read the Scriptures and offer prayer. To him and to others she was accustomed to talk often very calmly and hopefully and often longingly, about heaven.
---And so she faded away. At the last "as a shock of corn fully ripe," she was gathered into the garner of the Lord.
---Her funeral was very largely attended, and many, as they stood at the grave, felt the force of the divine declaration, her "works do follow" her.
---Her husband in his loneliness, wishes to express his sincere gratitude for all the kindness and sympathy that friends and neighbors have shown him in his affliction.
