WAS MATRON AT VENANGO COUNTY JAIL

Violet Opal Confer Voorhies, 93, formally of Venus, died on Friday, April 27, 2001, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home. She was born on May 6, 1907, in Venus, the daughter of the late John and Velma Goodman Confer. At a young age she moved to the Oil City-Franklin area where she married Floyd R. Voorhies in the Oil City Evanglical Church in July of 1929. The couple then settled in the Venus-Fertigs area in 1934, where they ran a diary farm. Her husband preceded her in death on November 30, 1988. She served as matron at the Venango County Jail for 12 years while her late husband, Floyd, was the jail warden, first during his father's term as sheriff in the 1930s and then from 1961 to 1970 during the tenure of Sheriff David Berenson. She was a member of the Pine Grove Township Fire Department Auxiliary, Senior Citizens Club and attended the Grace Baptist Church of Seneca. She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Ann and her husband, Norman Fischer, of State College; two grandchildren, Tim Fischer of State College, and Michelle Fischer and her husband, George Dixon, of Munson; three brothers, Robert and George Confer of Bedford, and Jack Confer. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patty Jean Voorhies, one sister, Florence Ludwig and four brothers, Cecil, Herbert, Philip and Francis Confer. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Osenider Funeral Home, Oil City. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Dana J. LaPage, pastor of the Grace Baptist Church in Seneca officiating. Burial will be at the Grove Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oil City Presbyterian Home, 10 Vo Tech Drive, Oil City, PA 16301.
