IRENE WADDELL

Chariton friends were greatly shocked and grieved to learn of the death of Miss Irene Waddell, formerly of this city, which occurred in Des Moines last Saturday afternoon, Dec. 3, 1921, at 1:20 o'clock, after an illness of but a week with inflammation of the liver and leakage of the heart.

The remains were brought to Chariton Tuesday forenoon and taken to St. Andrew's Episcopal church, where funeral services were held in the afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. A. Taylor, after which interment took place in the Chariton cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, emblematic of love for the dead and sympathy for the living.

Irene Waddell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Waddell, was born in Gallia county, Ohio, on Nov. 1st, 1847. When quite young she moved with her parents to Mason City, West Virginia, where she grew to young womanhood and resided for many years, later going to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she lived for some time.

About fifteen years ago she came to Chariton and with the exception of one year spent in Cuba, has since made her home with her sister, Mrs. W. B. Penick, moving with her and her family to Des Moines about a year and a half ago.

She had been an active and faithful member of the Episcopal church for about forty-eight years and was also a member of the "Old Thirteen" chapter of the D.A.R. at this place, and a member of the Eta Delphian study club at Des Moines. She was a highly educated woman and received her early learning in the public schools of West Virginia and was also a student at the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, Ohio.

During her long residence here she won warm friends of all with whom she came in contact by her many charming traits of character and genial manners, and her passing away has brought sadness to many hearts. The sympathy of all will be extended to the sole surviving sister, Mrs. Penick, and other relatives.
