The story of the Bonner Family as told as best told in a letter written by J. C. Mitchell (husband of Verna Bonner) to Bill Stewart, January 16, 1986, he tells the story of Daniel Reuel Bonner,Jr. and all that he did to try to "keep the children together" after the untimely death of his parents - they died one year apart. Flora Gay Bonner was pregnant with twins when her husband died suddenly in April of 1909. Following his death, Flora Bonner moved back to Moscow to be near her family - she did not "feel well" for she was pregnant with twins. After her death the children were parceled out to other family members, as there were five children to care for, and the youngest was only a few months old. Daniel Reuel was only 12 years of age at the time. Reuel, Jr., as they called Daniel Reuel Bonner, Jr. went to live with his Aunt Julia and Uncle George Brock. This did not work for him because his Uncle George was somewhat abusive - so he ran away. He lived with Pearl and Claud Saxon in New Willard, and later went to Livingston. He eventually began working for Louis Gerlach in Livingston. His parents had lived in Livingston and had many friends. Reuel was convinced that Mr. Gerlach had been convinced to hire him by Miss May Andress and Miss Lillian Miller of Livingston. Eventually Reuel began traveling for a wholesale hardware company out of Sulphur Springs - he eventually moved there. At the age of 17 he gathered up all of his brother and sisters and hired a lady to stay with them and moved back into the Bonner home in Livingston. They lived there until 1920 or 1921. Gay Bonner married Ben Collins and Reuel had married. When he eventually moved to Sulphur Springs, he carried Ben Lewis and Flora. Verna Bonner went to live with her sister, Gay, and her husband Ben Collins.J. C. Mitchell said, "D. R. Bonner, Jr. was one of the finest men that I have ever known. He was a Christian gentlemen, was Superintendent of the Sunday School of the First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs for more than 40 years. He did not have much schooling, but had a brilliant mind, and was very good in mathematics. He later opened and operated his own wholesale hardware business in Sulphur Springs."
