Louisa Melissa, daughter of Alfred and Susannah Bowne, was born in Franklin county, one mile east of Laurel, Dec. 3rd, 1866 and died at her home near Nulltown, Ind., Thursday, Dec. 14, 1899, at 7 o'clock a. m., aged 33 years and eleven days.
She was united in marriage to Clarence Garrison, October 12th, 1887, and was the mother of seven children, five of whom survive her--one daughter and four sons--who are left in the tender years of childhood to realize what a cheerless place home is without a mother.
Who, like a mother, can kiss away tears, and soothe away sorrow and banish all fears? Who, like a mother, can share every loss? Who, like her, lead to Him and the Cross? She was sick nine weeks and suffered intensely during that time, but was seldom heard to complain. Her affliction was borne with calmness born of a perfect faith in Him whom she knew she could trust and all would be well.
She joined the M. P. church in 1886, since which she never wavered in her belief that Jesus was her friend and Savior. There were times during her illness that her friends entertained hopes of her recovery, even the day before she died she was thought to be better, but heart failure came up and she fell to sleep in her husbands arms to waken in a brighter home--a place not made with hands--eternal in the heavens. She was a kind and sympathizing friend and neighbor, a good devoted mother, whose every thought was for the comfort of those around her especially the sorrowing husband who never left her bedside, but did all that loving hands could do, keeping faithful watch till the end. The family have the sympathy of the entire community, who commends them to Him who says: "I would to heal--Look unto me and be ye comforted."
Services were conducted at the Alpine Christian church by Rev. Jesse Miller, of the M. E. church, at Laurel. She was laid to rest in the Webb cemetery, near Alpine, on Saturday, Dec. 16, 1899, covered with masses of flowers, the tributes of love from her many relatives.
