Mrs. John V. Carroll Dies
Mrs. Martha Simpson Carroll, wife of Dr. John V. Carroll, pioneer Montana physician, died early Friday morning at the family home in Great Falls, 1519 Fourth avenue north. She was 66 years old and had been an invalid for about a year and a half.
Mrs. Carroll was born in Christiana, Norway, and came to the United States when a young girl. In 1882 she and a girl friend, now Mrs. Mary Denner of Tacoma, Wash., made the long trip to Montana and settled at Fort Assinniboine, where she met and was married the same year to Dr. Carroll.
In 1900 they moved to Fort Benton and lived there until 1914, when they moved to Great Falls, Dr. Carroll retiring from the practice of medicine that year.
She is survived by Dr. Carroll, one daughter and three sons: daughter, Mrs. Grace Houck of Great Falls; sons, Charles Carroll of Toledo, Ohio, and John V. Carroll, Jr., and James M. Carroll of Great Falls. One sister lives in Minnesota.
During her residence here, Mrs. Carroll was active in furthering the work of the Episcopal church, of which she had been a member for many years. The body was taken to the W. H. George chapel and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
--Great Falls Leader
Mrs. Carroll is well known in Fort Benton by practically all of the residents as the family made this their home until 1914. She has a large circle of friends in this section who join with the bereaved family in sorrow at her passing.
Funeral services were held in Great Falls Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. N. Chesnutt, an old friend of the family.
