Ex-Official of City Dies in Hospital

James M. Carroll, 52, former assistant city engineer, died Monday afternoon at a local hospital after a heart attack.
Son of the late John V. Carroll, pioneer physician and surgeon, James Martin Carroll was born at Fort Benton June 29, 1899, and attended Great Falls high school, leaving at the end of junior year to enter the United States Military academy. Graduating as an engineer from the academy in 1922, he later took postgraduate work at Stanford university.
He was an engineer for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Great Falls, Butte and New York city for 13 years; an assistant plant engineer for a year at Detroit Steel Products Co., Detroit; a guarantee engineer in New Jersey for two years, testing ships for navy commission, and an army engineer for three years.
He was Great Falls assistant city engineer for a total of four years. He resigned the second year to join the Falls Construction Co. in July 1950, as engineer and estimator. For the last several months he had been associated in some capacity with the E. L. Cowan Construction Co.
Survivors include the widow, Helen; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Hancock, Great Falls and Mrs. Dean Pargeon; a granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Grace Houck, and several nephews and nieces.
