Lela Mortensen was born to James Leland Mortensen and Effie Ann Evans. She received her early education in Salem, Oregon and graduated from Sugar-Salem High School in Sugar City, Madison County, Idaho.

Lela married Paul Elwood Nedrow on 27 Mar 1946 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho. Born to her and her first husband are Paula (Sensenbach), Brenda, Lanet, DeLynn P. and Jerry. Lela and Paul divorced in September 1954. Lela married Rulon Dale Pickett on November 16, 1958 in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. No children were born to Lela and Rulon, but she was the step-mother to Rulon's children Janet Lynn (Jensen), Beverly Dawn( Fiegler/Boyer), Valerie Jean (Everett/McRoberts) and Evan Dale (Wendy) from his previous marriage to Lyda McMurtrey.
