DJ Albee was born in Iowa to a family that heavily invested in farming. However, farming wasn't for him. DJ moved to Colorado Springs and became a mail carrier for some 17 years. During this time he met and married Myrtle Clark. He also invested in different enterprises - gold mine, Canon City property, an orchard, & a neighborhood grocery. In 1915 he purchased the Shell Lake Telephone, WI. By 1919 he had found Long Lake, MN and purchased the Long Lake Telephone Exchange, which he operated for many years. When he sold that to Bell Telephone, he open another grocery and ran that until his retirement.
