Windsor Gazette - 1 Apr 1880 - Last Monday the children and grandchildrenof Mrs. Apollo Sexson, mother of Perry Sexson, one of the oldest settlers of Ash Grove, celebrated her 80th birthday by a dinner and merry-making at the home of Perry Sexson, three miles southeast of Windsor, at which was assembled all her relations now living in Shelby County. We cannot hope to do the dinner justice by simply describing it but suffice it to say it was grand. A table was made in the open air about 50 foot long and on it was spread everything eatable that the appetite could crave. The principal feature was the birthday cake, consisting of 80 layers, one for every year of Mrs. Sexson's life; another was a roast pig served whole. Over 60 cakes adorned the board and it was estimated by competent judges that there was provisions enough to satisfy the hunger of three times the number that were present. The dinner was an entire surprise to Mrs. Sexson until the guests began to arrive, and on that day she had the pleasure of meeting 81 of the relatives besides numerous friends, 109 in all. The following bit of personal history will doubtless be of interest to our readers. The subject of this sketch was born in the State of Virginia on the 29th of March 1800. While yet very young, her father emigrated to Whitley Co., KY where she married and became the mother of 7 boys and 6 girls, three of which died, two in infancy. The rest have reached the age of maturity and have all married. She now has 10 children living, __ grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Twenty eight of her grandchildren are married and counting their companions, there are now 122 children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She became a resident of Ash Grove March 22, 1832 and is today as hale and hearty as many of her young neighbors and bids fair to celebrate many more pleasant anniversaries.
