He was attached to 4th Regiment Royal Artillery and serving as part of the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

LBdr Chandler was killed in a small arms fire engagement with enemy forces while on a foot patrol in the Nad–e Ali district of Helmand province.

Aged 32, from Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. He joined the army in January 2004 at age 26 and was posted with the regiment in Hohne, Germany. He deployed to Iraq as part of the Commanding Officer's Rover Group and on his return to Germany, he was entrusted with the position of CO's driver for two years. In March 2010, he deployed to Afghanistan with a fire support team operating out of Patrol Base Khaamar. Nicknamed "Bing", he was immensely popular and a great friend to many. Colleagues described him as unflappable, dependable and a rising star. He enjoyed motor sport, mountain biking, skiing and sailing and was a two-time Army luge champion.

LBdr Chandler leaves behind his parents Mike and Ann, his brother Steve along with other relatives and an extensive group of friends. His family released a statement: "Mark - a son and brother any parent would be proud of. A consummate soldier, a skier, a luger, an athlete and a lover of life. He will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends."

Funeral with full military honours was held on June 23, 2010 at St Michael's Church, Tidworth.
