Alphons A. Reifenrath

ST. JAMES--Alphons A. Reifenrath, 85, died Nov. 1, 2002, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D.

Visitation was Nov. 3 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 4 at Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church, Bow Valley, with Rev. Ross Burkhalter and Monsignor Cyril Werner officiating.

Burial was in Sts. Philip and James Cemetery, St. James.

Pallbearers were Daniel Walter, John Reifenrath, LeRoy Doeden, Frances Wieseler, Donald Reifenrath and Mathias Gubbels.

Honorary pallbearers were the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Alphons was born Feb. 24, 1917, to John G. and Julia (Imoehl) Reifenrath in St. James.

He attended grade school in St. James and has lived in the house where he was born his entire life. Alphons was engaged in farming.

Alphons was a member of the Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church, St. James, and a member of the choir, and was a charter member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 1920.

He removed snow from the Church, school and cemetery grounds for 12 years.

He participated in plays at St. James and played the violin and harmonica. He loved baseball, ice-skating and farming with tractors and livestock.

Alphons became a resident of Beverly Healthcare, Hartington, in August 2002.

Survivors include a brother and spouse, Joseph and Donna Reifenrath, Hartington; a sister, Angela Gubbels, Randolph; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Mary Gerleman, Lavina Reifenrath, Sister M. Aelreda Reifenrath, Rosalia Wieseler, Barbara Wieseler, Beatrice Walter and his twin, Agatha Goeden.

My parents are John and Julia Reifenrath. My sisters and brothers are: Mary Gerlman, Lavina Reifenrath, Sister M. Aelreda, Rosalia Wieseler, Barbara Wieseler, Beatrice Walters, Agatha Goeden, Angela Gubbels, Joseph Reifenrath.

I went to SS. Philip and James Catholic school and graduated from the eighth grade. I farmed with my father and raised cattle and hogs. My fond memories include having spelling contests, playing the violin and playing ball. I enjoyed playing cards.
