William Garfield Hawley was born 8 October 1883, the 7th of 10 children born to Joseph W. Hawley and Elmira Jane Prunty Hawley of Mercer County, WV. He married Ora Pearl Walker on 26 December 1906 when he was 23 and she was almost 20. The lived for a while in Mercer County, WV beginning their large family. The oldest, Thelma and Royce were born in West Virginia in 1907 and 1909 respectively. The next, Harry, was born in Forney, NC. Then Eva Mae was born in West Virginia. Helen was born in Pisgah Forest, NC. Lucille and the subsequent children, William Jr., Estalena, Lindbergh, Dorothy and Bobby were born in North Carolina. In Stanley, NC, the family operated Hawley Lumber Company first logging and sawing, later retailing lumber cut by others. W.G. Hawley died 2 Aug 1974 in Gastonia, NC. He is buried in Hillcrest Gardens near Stanley.

From Gastonia Gazette 3 Aug 1974. "STANLEY - William G. Hawley, 90, of 422 S. Main St., died Friday morning after a short illness. He was the founder of Hawley Lumber Company which he operated for 49 years as well as being a building contractor. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stanley. Surviving are his widow, Ora P. Walker Hawley, five sons, Royce E., Harry W., William G. Jr., Linberg H. and Bobby L. Hawley, all of Stanley; six daughters, Mrs. Thelma Dunn, Charlotte, Mrs. Eva Mae Wallace, Stanley, Mrs. Helen Rouse of the home, Mrs. Lucille Rhyne and Mrs. Estalenah Jamison, both of Stanley, Mrs. Dorothy Love, Charlotte; 47 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Hawley of Bluefield, WV. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church with the ..."
