Mr. Hawley was born October 1, 1931, in Gaston County, to the late William Garfield and Ora Walker Hawley. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joann Hawley, five sisters, three brothers, and a stepson, Larry Rogers. He served in the United States Air Force and then later worked for Hawley Lumber Company and also owned J&B Painting in Stanley.
He is survived by his wife, Amelia Bradshaw Hawley of the home; a son, Mike Hawley and wife Freida of Lincolnton; a daughter, Lou Waddell of Dallas; two stepdaughters, Sandra DeVore of Fletcher and Debra Buchanan of Candler; a brother, Lindy Hawley of Stanley; a sister, Eva Mae Wallace of Stanley; eleven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
