LOREN D. BARKLEY, 77, of Bluffton, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, 4:10 a.m., at Bluff-ton Regional Medical Center. Born April 17, 1931, in Adams County, to Ivan and Marie (Dager) Barkley, he was a 1949 graduate of Monroeville High School. He was semi-retired from D & B Electric, a business he owned for 42 years, and then passed on to his son-in-law, Dean George. Mr. Barkley and his friend, Dale Duncan founded D & B Electric in 1963. He also farmed for many years. He was a founding member and building chairman of the former Tocsin Church of Faith. He also served as building chairman of Crossroads Church in Decatur. In addition, he attended Union Church in Huntington with his wife, Janet. He participated in several mission trips to such places as El Paso, Texas, Oklahoma Indian Mission and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was very passionate about and active in Gideons International for more than 25 years. He was also involved with Habitat for Humanity and helped build 10 houses with the organization. He was named Wells County Citizen of the Year in 1998 by the Wells County Chamber of Commerce. His first marriage to Nova Jewel (Holt) Barkley was on June 24, 1950; she preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1995. His second marriage to Betty Ann (Double) Barkley was on April 27, 1996; she preceded him in death on April 21, 2005. He married Janet (Lund) Barkley on Sept. 3, 2005; she survives. Also surviving are his children, Michael (Ellen) Barkley of Churubusco, Donelle (Michael) McMasters of Harrison, Tenn., Mark (Dixie) Barkley of rural Ossian, Robin (Kevin) Lipp of Markle, Randy (Pamela) Barkley of rural Ossian and Kristie (Dean) George of Bluffton, in addition to 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pat Morgan of Decatur and Jean Wight of Bellingham, Wash. From his marriage to Betty Ann (Double) Barkley, surviving are three stepsons, Dennis K. (Darlene) Double, Mark A. (Janet) Double and Ronald D. Double; and stepdaughter, Lynn (Dan) Lucero, as well as one step-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren. Survivors from his marriage to Janet (Lund) Barkley include two stepsons, Tom (Maria) Lund and Jim Lund; and three stepdaughters, Elaine (David) Nahrwold, Cheryl (Mark) Campbell and Jana (Herb) Gass, along with 11 step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother; and one sister. Service is 10 a.m. Friday at Crossroads Church in Decatur, 6551 Piqua Road, with visitation one hour prior to service. The Rev. Jerry Morris and Pastor Scott Jester officiating. Visitation also from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian. Burial in Monroeville Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials to missionaries Jerry and Rita Morris of El Paso, Texas and Jana and Herb Gass of Papua, New Guinea or Gideons International.
