Norma Jean Wight, age 93, of Bellingham, passed away at her home Sunday, July 24, 2016.

Jean grew up as a farm girl in rural Indiana, helping her father in the barn and fields and her mother in the home. As a young woman she became very independent, loving her working career in Fort Wayne and Chicago.

She met and married the love of her life, Ronell, and moved with him to California in 1949. They raised their family and enjoyed traveling and camping every summer.

Jean loved to sew and cook; over the years she made numerous quilts for family members and the needy. Her cookie drawer was always full of freshly baked cookies for all the neighborhood kids to enjoy.

She was active in the Methodist Church wherever they lived and was especially proud of the time she spent working with the preschool children when they attended Church of the Wayfarer in Carmel, CA.

Jean was always a people person, welcoming everyone into her home. She always saw the best in everyone.

Jean loved being a Grandmother. Her grandchildren brought her so much joy; she was so proud of them all and followed their lives closely. She extended that love and care to her great-grandchildren as they came along.

Jean is survived by her husband, Ronell; daughter, Mary Ann Ostlund (Buzz); sons: John (Jennifer), Ronell and Ned (Verenice); grandchildren: Megan Peterson (Greg), Kristopher Wight, Scott Ostlund (Yizreel), Jessica Mullen (Chris), Ryan Wight (Hoa), Jessalee Wight and Isabella Wight; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 1, 2016, 10:30 AM at Garden Street United Methodist Church in Bellingham, with Pastor Kathy Hartgraves officiating.

Private family graveside, Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham, WA.

Jean's family would like to thank her caregivers for their loving care and the wonderful people at Whatcom Hospice.

Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Garden Street Methodist Church or Whatcom Hospice, 2806 Douglas AV, Bellingham, WA 98225.
