The passing of Hugo Pohler Sr., brought many expressions of sorrow to all of those who has know him so favorably over the past 35 years of residence in Shiner.
He was born in Komensky December7, 1890 and died in the Wagner Hospital January 13, 1958 at 5:38 a.m. His final summons came at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 6 days. He was the son of Henry and Emily (Guettner) Pohler, now deceased.
Mr. Pohler was married to Miss Agnes Schaeffer, who preceded him in death in 1926. For 21 years Mr.. Pohler valuable service in the café business. Later he was widely known as a scrap metal buyer.
After Mrs. Pohler death Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Fischnar with their four children moved with their four children into the Pohler home in order that his sister, Mrs. Fischnar, could assist her brother in rearing his two young sons.
Mr. Fischnar died in 1941 and Mr. Pohler became more of a father than an uncle, while Mrs. Fischnar shared affectionate care upon his two sons. This relationship continued over he years to the present time.
Rosary was recited Monday and Tuesday at the Chapel at 7:00 p.m. and the funeral services with full military honors were conducted Wednesday morning, January 1, from the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, at 8:30, thence to Shiner Catholic Church for religious rites at 9:00 a.m. with the Rev. Father John K. Hanacek conducting the last impressive rites.
Mr. Pohler was a veteran of World War 1, having served overseas in France. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus. Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. After the organization of Kolar-Stanek Post No. 201, he was chosen as a member of the Firing Squad and served in this capacity for many years, assisting this group in military services in Shiner and surrounding towns.
Mr. Pohler is the first of his direct family to paw away. Those of his immediate hose hold who are deeply grieved over his death include two sons; Hugo Jr. and Roy Pohler of Shiner; his devoted sister, Mrs. Arthur (Frieda) Fischnar; 3 nephews; Eugene, John Burnell and Arthur Fischnar, all of Houston, a beloved niece, Miss Fay Fischnar, died in Houston in 1944. Two other sisters, Mrs. Martha Biehunko of Moulton; Mrs. Della Aschenbeck of Houston, two brothers; Richard Pohler, Moulton; Henry Pohler, Houston; also mourn his loss.
In an effort to seek permanent relief Mr. Pohler submitted to major surgery about a year ago. This proved most helpful and he resumed his business assisted by his son, Roy, who secured leave of absence from his position in Lake Charles, Louisiana to be with his father and help him until complete recovery.
Soon the ravages of malignancy again asserted itself and the decline was obvious. Death came as a gentle messenger to relieve his struggle.
Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery, with Laddie Stluka, Jimmy Cimrhanzel, Alvin Boehm, Jimmy Bozka, Harvey Pohler and C. J.Sofka, serving as casket attendants.
Those participating in military honors for their deceased Buddy will be published next week.
