Mrs. Hobbs, 99, died Aug. 26, 2000, at Silver Cross Nursing Home. She was born in Floyd, La., on July 4, 1901, to James D. Herring and Sallie King Herring. She was a graduate of Westmoreland School in San Antonio, where she was awarded the scholarship medal. She studied violin at the Bush Conservatory in Chicago and graduated from Whitworth College.
She was a homemaker. In Jackson, she was a member of the McDowell Music Club and played the violin with a small orchestra under the direction of the late Professor Robert Pitard. In Brookhaven, she was a member of the Climbers Club and the Maids and Matrons. She served on the board of the King's Daughters Association and was on its planning committee when the old hospital was transformed into the Silver Cross Home.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Henry Ware Hobbs, and her son, Henry Ware Hobbs Jr.
Survivors are her daughter, Ann Hobbs Franks of Jackson; her grandchildren; Susan Neal Maynard of Chapel Hill, N.C., Van Hobbs of Madison, Allan Hobbs of Columbia, S.C, Marcie Farnsworth of Orlando, Fla., Lyle Hobbs of Brookhaven, Russell Hobbs of Hattiesburg, Sara Hope Franks of Washington, D.C., and 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchildren.
