FINAL RITES HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON FOR J.D. HERRING

Final rites were held from the Oak Grove Methodist church Sunday
afternoon for James D. Herring, 74, resident of Oak Grove, on of
West Carroll's most prominent pioneer citizans, who succumbed to
a short illness at a Jackson, Miss. hospital Friday night at
9 o'clock. A hosst of friends were present to pay their last respects.
Interment waas in the Oak Grove cemetery.

After a short seervice at the church, where he was a member, with the
Rev. J.E. Hearne, pastor, officiating. Mr. Herring, a member of the
Masonic fraternity for more than 54 years, charter member of Pioneer
lodge No. 340 F.&A.M., was buried by his brother Masons. W.E. Huffman,
district deputy grand master of the Grand Lodgge Free and Accepted
Masons of Louisiana, presided. Catron-Golden Funeral home was in
charge of arrangements.

Mr. Herring, who was born at Floyd, former parish seat, where he
resided untill 20 years ago, at the time of his death he was chair-
man of the parish war price and rationing board and a director of
the Bank of Oak Grove. When the parish seat was at Floyd, he served
as sheriff for 18 years.

He is survived by his wife; a son Major John S. Herring, army physician
statiioned in India; three daughters, Mrs. H.W. Hobbs of Anniston,
Ala., Mrs. John B. Perkins of Brookhaven, Miss., and Mrs. Marvin M.
Black of Palo Alto, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. S.E. Birdsong Sr. of
Jackson, Miss.

Active pallbearers were: D.L. Fiske, C.H. Wactor, Edgar J. McCormick,
Holmes Mitchiner, J. Vernon Sims, Marvin N. Lipp, John Brown McIntosh,
and Joe T. Kelly. Honorary pallbearers were: C.H. Koerner, Clyde T.
Turner, D.M. McIntosh, John R. McIntosh, R.V. Reeves, T.O. Mitchiner,
Geo. W. Long, W.L. Ross Sr., Geo. A. Schorck and R.F. Cummins.
