He served as a surgeon in the Revolutionary War from Connecticut with the rank of Captain. Elisha took part in the Battle of New Haven in answer to the alarm in response to the British General Tryon's invasion on July 5, 1779. He served in the Militia in the regiment of Col. Worthington. After the War, he moved to Hamden, then New Haven and finally to Marcellus. He served as a doctor after the War.
He was married three times and had children from all his marriages.
His first wife was Rebecka Bellamy, born June 1, 1753 in New Haven, Ct. She died October 23, 1792 in Hamden. She and Elisha were married October 23, 1771 in Newton, Fairfield, Ct. Their children were as follows:
( a.) Samuel Chapman born March 30, 1772 in Newton. He was supposed to have been taken prisoner in the War of 1812 and never heard from again.
(b.) Elisha Chapman December 2, 1787 in Hamden, New Haven, Ct. Died of yellow fever in the West Indies.
(c.) one other unknown child.
His second wife was Mary Bristol, born in Hamden, Ct. on October 25 1767 and died there on March 6, 1799.
(a.) Simeon B. Chapman born June 4, 1794.
Elisha's third wife was Phebe Gates born in New London, Connecticut on March 23, 1778 and died in Marcellus on August 23, 1837. Their children are as follows:
(a.) Jennet Chapman born April 10, 1800 in New Haven
Connecticut and died December 31, 1876 there. She married John Bixby of Keene, New Hampshire.
(b.) Lincoln B. Chapman born July 2, 1802 in New Haven, Ct. Died in Marcellus on February 19, 1881. Married Sarah Reed.

(d.) Emeline Chapman
(e.) Grace Chapman born 1804 in New Haven, Ct. and died 1817 in Marcellus, New York.
(F) Elisha Chapman unmarried resided in New Orleans.
