MOREY B. ASHLEY

Funeral services were held from the Lakeview Memorial Chapel in Livonia, Wednesday, Apr. 12, 1972, for Morey B. Ashley of Richmond Center Rd., Livonia who died in Canandaigua, Apr. 10.

Mr. Ashley was born in the Town of Richmond Feb. 17, 1876, the eldest son of Albert and Alice Ashley. His brother, Herbert (Ted), who lived in Aliens Hill, died in 1944, a sister, Mrs. Clarence (Lillian) Wells of Clifton Springs died in 1949.

He attended Honeoye Union, Canandaigua Academy and graduated from Ohio Weslyan University in 1898.

His retirement from farming still left him with his great love for horses that he continued to enjoy until last year. He was the fourth generation to live on the land.

He was secretary and treasurer of the Richmond Cemetery Association for 43 years. He served as deacon of the Honeoye United Church of Christ from 1919 to 1944 and deacon emeritus from 1944 to 1972; a charter member of the Grange.

He celebrated his 96th birthday, Feb. 17, in Thompson Memorial Hospital with his wife and friends, of Richmond Center.

His first wife, Florence Miller of Ohio died in August of 1917. His second wife Flora Wendt died March 24, 1972.

Survivors are his son, Levan; three grandchildren, Stephen married to Janice Gilbert, Carl and Laurel both at home; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Leeson.; several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Robert Clark officiated with interment in Richmond Center Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Honeoye United Church of Christ.

His first marriage was Florence Miller, after her death, he married Flora Gould Wendt.

He had one son Levan/Livan Ashley (sp. Ruth). Plus one step-son from Florea, Fred Wendt.

According to a report of the American Guernsey club, Morey B. Ashley recently sold Bella's Clara, a registered Guernsey cow, to Fred M. Bell of Holcomb. He loved horses and was a Deacon of Honeoye United Church of Christ .

MOREY ASHLEY

Morey B. Ashley of Richmond will be 91 years old on Feb 17. On Sunday, Feb. 19. his friends and relatives are invited to an open house from to 5:30 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Levan Ashley.

Mr. Ashley was bom in 1876 in the town. The fourth oldest son of Albert and Alice Beach Ashley. He attended Honeoye Union school. Canandaigua Academy and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. His one brother Herbert (Ted) lived most of his life in Allen's Hill and died in 1944. His sister. Mrs. Clarence (Lillian)Wells of Clifton Springs, died in 1949.

Mr. Ashley is the oldest voter in the town. The fourth generation of Ashleys to live on his land, he only recently retired from farming. Mr. Ashley's first wife, Florence Miller, died in 1917. The present Mrs. Ashley is the former Flora Wendt.

He has one son Levan, three grandchildren. Stephen married and in service, Carl and Laurel Ann. attending Honeoye Central school.

Memorial Plaque Erected
On Site of Old Church

A plaque has been erected in memory of Morey B. Ashley, former president of the Richmond Center Cemetery Association. Richmond Center is the original location of the First Congregational Church built from 1817-1818. Organized in 1802, the Society of Richmond purchased ten acres of land from David Crooks in 1804 The land was used for a church, cemetery, a parsonage and a schoolhouse.

In January of 1863 regular Sunday meetings at the First Congregational Church of Richmond Center ceased. The Congregational Church of Honeoye and Society were organized in Nov. 1854 and the Honeoye Church was built in 1861. On the first Sunday in January of 1863 a meeting was held of the two societies; the Richmond Center Church and Honeoye Church. At this meeting it was decided to join the two churches, meetings moved to the Honeoye Church. Stephen Ashley, grandson of Morey B. Ashley is the current president of the Richmond Center Cemetery Association.
