From Holland St. John -"William was the eldest son of Wilson and Elizabeth (Downen) Jones and was born February 10, 1819 on the family farm in Posey County, Indiana. His father had established a homestead in Black township north of the town of Mount Vernon around 1815. William came from a large family. He had eleven brothers and sisters: Louisa J., Samuel R., Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Margaret E., Angeline, Emaline, Elva, Levitus B., Leroy and Angelitha. On November 19, 1837 he married Rachael Jane West. The 1850 U S Census records that William had developed a farm in Black Township, Posey County and was 31 years of age. His wife Rachael, who was born in Sumner County, Tennessee in 1818 and was 32 years of age. By this time they had three children: Allen (7), John B.(5) and Elizabeth (2). The three children were all born in Indiana. One source mentions that William and Rachel had three more children: Sarah E., Daniel and Sarah. Rather odd that they would name two daughters Sarah; however, Sarah B. was born in 1849, lived for less than one year and died in August of 1850. It appears that they named a later daughter Sarah. Some information has been gathered about their childen. Allen was born 8 November 1842 in Posey County; John B. was born 1845 in Posey County; Elizabeth was born in 1848 in Posey County; Sarah B. was born in 1849 and died in August 1850 in Posey County; Daniel was born in 1849 (one source has 1851) in Posey County and #2 Sarah was born in 1853 (one source has 1855)5. One source included a son James born in 1876 in Illinois which is unlikely. This son has not been verified as William and Rachel's. Little else is known about William and more research is needed. When and where he passed away has not been determined."
