David Fisher SR 93, of Harlingen entered into rest May 18, 2010.
David was born May 27, 1916 in Iowa City, Iowa to James and Sophia Fisher.
Upon high school graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corp as B-24 bombardier. He was stationed in Harlingen, later in Italy. Dave was down in enemy territory in Yugoslavia. Having to bail out, the parachute he was wearing only partially opened hitting the ground and breaking his back.
The surviving crew and David was assisted by a partisan network and they walked to friendly territory. David, was MIA for 3 months. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
He worked for the State of Iowa Conservation Dept. and in 1957 the US Fish & Wildlife Service as a Game Mgmt. Agent. He transferred from IA, MO, ND, MN and settled in Pierre, SD in 1962, retiring in 1977.
Dave championed fair chase and put the fear of God in waterfowl overbaggers & baiters.
He married Marguerite Joy in 1942 and they shared 31 years until she joined the Lord in 1974, having contracted M.S. in 1961.
Dave met Jeri Taylor in 1976, united in marriage in 1977. After sharing 25 years, Jeri passed to heaven in 2003. During their 1st few years together they wintered in MN near Fergus Falls, MN on Pickeral Lake then snowbirded to, settling in Harlingen in 1998.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marguerite, and second wife Jeri and was last of six siblings to go. He is survived by his two sons, two stepchildren, two grandsons, numerous, step grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, VFW and was a treasured member of the Grace Lutheran Church.
A Memorial service will be held Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10 am at Grace Lutheran Church on E. Jackson in Harlingen. Full military honors will be held in Sturgis, SD at Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 1 pm.
Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home 1702 E. Harrison Harlingen, Texas 425-8200.
