Peter enlisted for the CIVIL WAR at the age of 16 in company H of the 17th Illinois Infantry under Captain Hall of Lewiston, Illinois, and was transferred to Company F, 8th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry as a Private. The 8th Regiment saw action at FORT HENRY, TN; FORT DONELSON, TN; battle of SHILOH; advance on and siege of CORINTH, MS; battles of THOMPSON'S HILL, RAYMOND, CHAMPION'S HILL; siege of VICKSBURG, MS, assaults on VICKSBURG, surrender of VICKSBURG; siege of SPANISH FORK and FORT BLAKELEY. Discharge papers list him as 5 ft, 8 3/4 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes with brown hair and his occupation was the of a "Farmer" when enrolled in the army. Enlisted on 05 Dec, 1863 and discharged 04 May, 1866 at Baton Rouge, LA.

Louisa Jane and Peter Wheeler received a covered wagon and a farm in Faribault County, Minnesota as a wedding gift from her parents. They moved to Iowa in 1883. Historical Records of Ringgold County, Iowa said, "Louisa J. and Peter A. Wheeler settled on a farm with 480 acres - he had 83 head of thorough-bred cattle, 23 horses, and made a specialty of purest breed PolandChina hogs. He ranked with the best of Liberty Township as a stock-raiser."
