By 1900 the family had moved to Texas. On June 14, 1904, JR married Miss Ora Elizabeth Hudspeth in the Stoneburg, TX, Church of Christ. JR and Ora stayed in Texas, where JR was a bookkeeper for an oil mill in Montague, then managed a peanut mill in Weatherford, TX. In 1930 he was the proprietor of a general produce company.
JR and Ora had three children: Sarah Minna, James Rush Jr, and Edwin Thomas Fleming.
