Benjamin Thomas Fleming was born in Rankin, Kentucky to parents William Simpson Fleming and Sarah Dunnegan Fleming, the 2nd of 8 children.

At some point after his military service, Ben moved to Oklahoma, where his parents had relocated after leaving Texas. His mother had passed away, and Ben stayed with his father in Norman, OK. In 1917 he married Alice Polk, an extremely talented and well-known watercolor artist who was an instructor at OU. Ben worked as a retail merchant in the grocery business. He started Fleming Grocers, which grew to become a huge business with its own fleet of trucks that traveled cross-country.
