Hazel Heiges, a Gilroy deacon once active in PTA projects, died July 26, 2003 in San Jose. She was 85. Mrs. Heiges was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada while her family was immigrating from Norway to the United States. She was reared in San Francisco, where she met her husband, Robert Heiges Sr. They married in 1935. They began their family in Lompoc, moving to Santa Rosa in 1944, and then permanently settled in Gilroy in 1951. Mrs. Heiges was a member and deacon of the Gilroy Presbyterian Church. She was active in the PTA in Santa Rosa and Gilroy, and also served on the school board in Santa Rosa. She worked seasonally at Filice and Perrelli Cannery when her children went to college. She was an avid Giants fan, and she loved to grow and share cymbidium orchids. Mrs. Heiges is survived by her children, Robert Heiges Jr. of Kentucky, Glenda Mockros of Illinois, Nancy McDonald of Gilroy, Laurence Heiges of Oregon, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Lala Pederson of Santa Rosa and Gunda Gimle of Turlock; and her dear friend Laverne Mathison of Gilroy. The funeral is Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Avenue. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, family would appreciate donations to the Gilroy Presbyterian Church Parish Nurses or the Air Conditioning Fund, 6000 Miller Avenue, Gilroy, CA 95020 in her memory.
