Johann Jakob Hofer was born in Rothrist, Aargau, Switzerland February 4 1835. He married his wife Elizabeth Weber in Rothrist. They had four children: Emma Hesina, Jakob, Traugott Jakob, and Maria Elisa. They emigrated to America and came across the country to settle in Utah. However most of his family decided to go further north into Idaho. Johann was a farmer all of his life and he taught his two sons how to farm as well.

He is survived by his son Traugott Jakob of Blackfoot, Idaho; his daughters Maria Elisa Datwyler of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Emma Reber of Littlefield, Arizona.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son Jakob, and his wife Elisabetha.

He was laid to rest in Washington City Cemetery.
