He is the son of Thomas and Cynthia (Reynolds) Barton. He is the husband of Della Mae (Reese) Barton (first wife) and Elsie Barton (second wife).

February 7, 1940 St. Joseph newspaper:

William A. Barton, sixty-seven years old. a farmer at Easton, Mo., died this morning at his home after a few days' illness. He was a lifelong resident of the community. His survivors are his wife. Mrs. Elsie Barton; eight sons, Jack, Glen, Joseph and George Freeman Barton, all of St. Joseph; Ray and Cecil Barton, Easton; Thomas Barton, Agency, and William A. Barton, Los Angeles; two daughters, Mrs. Grace Welty and Mrs. Vance Bercham, St. Joseph; three brothers, J. F. Barton. Russell Springs, Kan., and S. F. and C. A. Barton, Easton, and four sisters, Mrs. S. P. Robertson, Mrs.C. L. Modrell and Mrs. C. H. Taylor, Easton, and Mrs. Dora Burton, Gower. Mr. Barton was a member of the Ebenezer Church at Easton. The body is at Fleeman's mortuary.
