Nagel was born on March 16, 1914, in Fredericksburg, the son of Emil and Lina Karger Nagel. He married Alta Wells [d.September 15, 2005] in Cheyenne, WY. on May 13, 1942, and she survives. He was a 1933 graduate of Fredericksburg High School and held both bachelor and masters degrees from Texas A&M University. He was captain of both the varsity swimming and water polo teams at A&M, receiving several Southwest Conference titles and was the holder of records for several years. He served in the US Army and retired with the rank of Major. Following his retirement, he was an inspector with the Texas Department of Health. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, a son and their spouses: Caroline and Lee Caldwell of Kaneohe, HI, Charles A. and Karen Nagel of Indianapolis, IN; Mary E. and Terry A. Ilseng of Fredericksburg, Emily and Jimmy Duecker of Stonewall and Christina and George Arrambide of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren and two brothers, Ernst and his wife Lillian Nagel of Boerne and Chester Nagel of Colorado, Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gretchen, Mrs. Reinhardt Enderlin. Memorials may be made to the Bethany Lutheran Church Building Fund, HCMH Nursing Scholarship or to the charity of choice.
