Mr. Ernst Nagel, age 94, a longtime resident of Boerne, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. He was born June 14, 1908, in Fredericksburg, the son of Emil and Lina Nagel.

He served as Kendall County deputy sheriff, Kendall County tax assessor-collector, Kendall County commissioner and chief of the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department. Playing baseball for over 30 years in Hill Country leagues, he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and also prepared income tax returns for many area ranchers and residents.

Mr. Nagel was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Carl Nagel; sister, Gretchen Enderlin; brother, Gilbert Nagel; and wives Elsie Marquardt Nagel, Hedwig Nagel and Lily Behr Nagel. He is survived by a brother, Chester Nagel of East Falmouth, Massachusetts; his children, Joyce Jasperson of Boerne, Diana Becker of Bandera and JoAna Kessler of San Antonio; stepchildren Charles Thomson of Boerne, Willene Leeder of Boerne, Donna Stewart of Sisterdale, David Behr of Sisterdale and Dwight Behr of Corpus Christi; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Monday, Jan. 6, at First United Methodist Church, with Mayor Patrick Heath and Pastor Barbara Galloway-Edgar officiating. Burial was in the Boerne Cemetery.

Paulbearers were Donald C. Backer, Douglas R. Backer, Ryan J. Kessler, Robert L. Kessler, Russel W. Kessler, Ryan N. Stewart and Cory S. Stewart.
