"Vincent was a handsome, olive-skinned boy who was very athletic and had won many medals in his young life. He belonged to the Olympic Football Team (a professional team at the time) and the Bain Zouves,"as written in the Memoirs of his sister, Rosa Anna Donegan nee Angelo. He worked as a bartender at his father's family saloon. He also belonged to the MoDoc Rowing Club and drowned during a practice run the Friday night before a major race scheduled for Sunday. The team was out on the Mississippi River and this was to be the last practice run before the race. The team of eight men left the boat-house when a ferry was sighted coming towards them. They misgauged the distance and were sucked under. They were all expert swimmers, but six of them drowned; only two survived. The authorities did not find Vincent's body until Sunday noon -down at Carondelet. They had to use cannon-fire to assist in their search. Of the eight children born to Frank and Elizabeth Angelo, Vincent was the first of their children to die before they did. Six of their eight children lost their lives well before Frank, Sr. and Elizabeth lived an additional ten years beyond her husband. Although this family experienced such tragedy, they had the love and fortitude to enjoy life and focus on their blessings.
