John was the son of John Guthrie and Mary Jane Reed. He married Mary Irvin Lochry. She was the daughter of Capt. Joseph Irvin. Mary first married Col. Archibald Lochry, leader of the ill-fated Lochry Expedition. John Guthrie was elected Captain of one of the companies organized by the white settlers in Westmoreland Cty. Pa. for the protection against Indian attacks. He entered the regular service when Capt. Matthew Jack entered. He became know as Capt. Jack and Matthew as Capt. Matt so the men could seperate them. Capt. Jack Guthrie became a famous Indian Scout. He was an astute Woodsman, skilled in Indian warfare, a patriot in the Revolution and a frontier ranger. He fought in Lochry's defeat, General St. Clair's defeat and was frequently engaged on the frontier before Wayne's Treaty. His oldest son, John, stated in the estate papers of his father, recorded in Westmoreland Cty., that Capt. Jack Guthrie had gone to Kentucky in search of government land for the family and had taken sick there and died. Capt. Jack left eight children. Word-of-mouth at the time is that his remains were returned to Wetmoreland Cty. Pa. for burial. This is unlikely as there were not any ways of preserving human remains on the frontiers at that time and it would have taken weeks to return to Westmoreland County. It is my thought that he is buried in Kentucky.
