Fred A. Shirley

Newton--Fred Allen Shirley, 68, of Newton died Monday (May 31, 1971) at his residence. Visitation will be held Tuesday (tonight) at Griner Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral Services will be held from the First Baptist Church in Newton at 2:00 pm with the Revs. Shelby Newman and Tommie Huff officiating. Burial will follow in the Newton City Cemetery. Mr. Shirley was born April 11, 1903 in Liberty, Miss. to Homer and Ara Taylor Shurley and married the former Miss Violet Lundberg on August 9, 1930 in Woodville, Miss. He was a retired carpenter for the Texas Company in Port Arthur, a member of the First Baptist Church of Newton, and the Knights of the Pythias. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Louise Whittaker and Elaine Hatfield and brother Dr. T. C. Shirley. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Violet Lundberg Shirley of Newton, one daughter Mona Cook of Newton, 4 grandchildren, Annie Jo, Bubba, Rebecca and Kevin Cook all of Newton, brother Homer Shirley, Jr. of Falfurrias, sisters, Lillian Weathersby of Bridge City, Ruth Davis of Houston, Grace Whittington of Sulphur, La., and Nina Nelson of Metairie, La. and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
