A family circle has been broken, a dear father has been summoned home and an old settler of this community is missing from within our midst.
Mr. Andrew E. Johnson, was born in Ostergottland, Sweden, on October 23rd, 1855, and passed to his eternal reward on November 22nd, 1934, at the age of 79 years and one month old.
The early years of Mr. Johnson's life were spent in the land of his nativity. In the year of 1880, he landed on the shores of America, and took residence north of Clarinda, Page County, Iowa. Here, four years later, on February 27th, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Mathilda Anderson, who preceded him in death on March 3rd, 1933.
To this union were born three children, two sons, Edwin and Henry, both of Essex, Iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. Caleb Freed, of Bethesda, Iowa. To mourn his going are left the three children and one foster-daughter, Mrs. Ivan Swanson, of Red Oak, Iowa, also seven grandchildren; three brothers, Aaron and Victor, of Emerson, Iowa, and Frank Johnson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, one sister, Mrs. Gust E. Carlson, of Red Oak, Iowa.
Mr. Johnson was, during a number of years, a member of the Fremont Mission Church, until fourteen years ago, when Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Essex, and their church affiliation were transferred to the Evangelical Mission Church of Essex, Iowa, of which Mr. Johnson remained a faithful member until the time of his death.
He was a man of quiet and loveable traits, having a wide circle of friends, and being minus a single enemy.
The funeral took place last Sunday from the home at Essex, where Mrs. David Almquist and Mrs. Reuben Lindburg furnished the music, singing the beautiful son, "All The Way My Savior Leads Me;" and from the Mission Church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. Hultman, and music furnished by Mr. Anton Hamon, in Swedish "Jag Vet En Port Som Oppen Star." Also, Mrs. H. Hultman and Miss Alice Hultman, singing two duets, "Heaven is My Home," and "Shall We Meet Beyond The River."
Interment was had in the Essex Cemetery by the side of his faithful wife.
Pallbearers were: G. W. Peterson, Anton Peterson, C. J. Carlson, Eric Lind, C. O. Peterson, and Hugo Swanson.
W. O. Carson, Essex Mortician, was in charge of arrangements.
