From the SOUTH BEND (IN) TRIBUNE, Friday, May 27, 1949:

Mrs. Maryann Mikula, aged 79, of 1117 West Thomas street, a gold star mother of world war I, died at 5:05 p.m. Thursday in her home after an illness of nine days. Born in Poznan, Poland, Jan. 29, 1870, she came to South Bend 46 years ago from Manistee, Mich. Her husband, Jacob, died in 1918. Surviving are three sons, Anthony, of South Bend; Floyd, with the United States army in Virgin Islands, and Irvin, of Laporte, Ind.; six daughters, Mrs. Josephine Nowak, Mrs. Cecilia Danilowicz, Mrs. Theciz Bickel and Mrs. Irene Hauteman, all of South Bend; Mrs. Theresa Graves, of Mishawaka, and Mrs. Helen Burnside, of Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Frank Zatarga, of South Bend, and John Stanley Zatarga, of Manistee; a sister, Mrs. Rose Tyran, of Manistee; 33 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mikula was a member of the Women's Apostleship of Prayer of St. Hedwige's church; women's auxiliary of Schuyler Colfax post No. 357, American legion. Six of her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
