GEORGE W. ROBERTS

George W. Roberts, youngest son of Abijah and Laura Roberts, was born in Warren county, Illinois, on April 11, 1849. He passed from this life to the Great Beyond on June 21, 1927, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 10 days.

On October 24, 1869, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Threlkeld at Greenbush, Ill. They made their home in that state until 1890, when they moved to Warren county, Iowa, living near Liberty Center until 1900, then moving to the farm four miles northwest of Chariton, which has since been the family home.

Ten children were born to them, three dying in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Minnie Chappell, Mrs. Laura Anderson and Ora L., all of Chariton; Giles W., of Van Meter; Jed and Earl, of Des Moines; and Mrs. Lennie Malone, of LeRoy. These children, with twenty-three grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, are left to mourn the loss of a loving father and grandfather. His three brothers and one sister have all preceded him in death.

On January 9, 1925, after more than fifty-five years of married life, death claimed his wife and since that time he has been cared for by his children. During his wife's last illness he was suffering intensely with an infected toe, and one week after her death, he submitted to an operation in which part of the foot was removed. Later it was necessary to amputate the entire limb. Since that time he has been practically an invalid, although he recovered sufficiently enough to wear an artificial limb for a time.

During the last year he had been cared for at the family home by his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Chappell. He was confined to his bed only one week, but his extreme weakness had prevented him from leaving his home for several months.

Although he was always an upright and honorable citizen, he never professed Christianity until two years ago, when he united with the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist church, near Oakley, and was a faithful attendant for the short time his health permitted. While being confined to his home his greatest pleasure was in reading the Bible, praying and singing several well-beloved hymns. His one desire was that he would soon be called Home to meet the Savior who had redeemed him, and to be with the loved ones who had gone before.

Largely attended funeral services were held at the U. B. church in Chariton on Thursday, June 23, conducted by Rev. M. E. Young, pastor of the Mt. Zion church, assisted by Rev. George Jones, of Knoxville. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful. The remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Chariton cemetery. The four sons and two sons-in-law, who had borne their mother to her last resting place two years before, were also pall bearers for their father.
