Last Rites Held for Mrs. Durham

Mrs. J.P. Durham, long time resident of Durant passed away unexpectedly Sunday, November 21. She follows in death her husband who died in April of this year. She was formerly Miss Mary Elizabeth Mortimer of Winona, Mississippi and is the last member of her family. She is survived by four children Charles "Brother" Durham, Mrs. Louise Durham, Mrs. N. Weir Kyle, all of Durant, and Mrs. Joe W. Hughes of Jackson, also four grandsons; Weir Kyle, II, law student at Ole Miss; Charles P. Durham, II, of Dallas, Texas; Ronald H. Durham, U.S. Navy, Philadelphia, Pa. and Joe W. Hughes, II, student at Mississippi State University.

Mrs. Durham was a member of the First Baptist Church of Durant. She served as President of the Women Missionary Society of the First Baptist Society of the First Baptist Church several times and was also Circle Leader of the WMS. She was member of the Business Circle of the First Baptist Church. She served 25 years as Treasurer of the Durant Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She has a special talent for remembering names, dates and anniversaries, and many people around the world will miss this manner of thoughtfulness on her part. Members of the Durant Chapter of the UDC sat in a reserved section.

Rev. Durrell Makamson, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, of Durant offered a special prayer at the Southern Funeral Home prior to the Church Service. In accordance with the deceased written request prior to her death Robert E. Irby, Jr., sang "In the Sweet bye and Bye" accompanied by his wife, Ann. Officiating at the Church service was her pastor, Rev. Durrell Makamson, Rev. Johnny L Dinas of West Point, Mississippi. Interment was in Mizpah Cemetery with Rev. Robert Harden, Hamilton, Alabama giving the benedictory prayer.

Active pallbearers were Tom B. Hughes, Jr., Greenville; Emmett L. King, Jackson; Rev. Robert Harden, Hamilton, Alabama; Clovis Harden, Grenada; Billy Scruggs, Greenwood; and her three nephews, John Mortimer, George Percy Mortimer, both of Winona and Tom Mortimer of Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers were Albert Taylor, H.H. Lyon S.R. King, F.V. McCullar, Jimmy Hand, Sonny Potts, Henry McKenzie, Johnny Toten, H.E. Crumby, Dr. A.A. Derrick, Jr., Leon Engeleman, Vardaman Ellington, F.E. Owen, J.C. Robertson, all of Durant and Al Payne Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. John Burge, Kosciusko, Willis Cagle, Greenwood, and Ross Dickerson.
