MRS. HANNAH ASHBY SELECTED DISTRICT MOTHER OF THE YEAR

Mrs. Hannah Cropper Ashby sponsored by the Presidents Council of American Fork, has been selected Mother of the Year for the Timpanogos District.

Mrs. Ashby is the wife of Robert L. Ashby, who is a teacher, poultry producer, fur farmer, architect and author.

Well-known as a poetress, teacher, Republican party of official and church worker, Mrs. Ashby is the mother of 10 children, all of whom have been graducated from Brigham Young University. Three children have doctorate degrees and four others have completed varying amounts of graduate work, The Ashbys also have 44 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

The new nomminee is the author of more than 300 poems, many of them appearing in LDS periodicals and in "Utah Sings." She has just completed a third volume of her own poems entitled, "I Live to Live." She is a member of the Utah Poetry Society and has belonged to the National Association of American Penwomen.

She has served as district, precinct and county vice chairman of the Republican party and also a member of the Utah State Ladies Republican Committee. On many occasions, she has served as judge of electrons and was once chosen a presidential elector. She has citations or personal letters of commendation from President Harry S. Truman, President Dwight D. Eisebhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon.

For five years she taught school, part of the time at the BYU Training School. She was supervisor of primary grades in Spanish Fork. Her combined years of service in the LDS Church total well-over 100, including a stake mission, Relief Society Stake Board, president of ward YWMIA and teacher in various classes of Sunday School and Relief Society.

For more than 22 years, she was a member of the American Fork Library Board. In 1966, she was a recipient of the BYU Alumni Association Distinquished Service Award for meritorious service to community, state, nation, humanity and church.

Her 10 children are as follows: Mrs. H. Leon (Ruth) Ivie, teacher in Ogden Public Schools; Mrs. Edwin R. (Althea) Kimball, remidial reading specialist in Provo Public Schools;Mrs. J. T. (Lucretia) Arbon, owner and director of the Arbon Pre-School Nursury in Bountiful;Mrs. E. Wesley (Mary) Porter, manager of the general ledger department at Du Pont Co. in Wilmington, Delaware.

PROMINENT AMERICAN FORK LADY DIES

AMERICAN FORK--Hannah Cropper Ashby, 96, American Fork, died Monday, October 3, 1976, at the home of a daughter in Bountiful of natural causes.

She was born December 13, 1879 at Fillmore to Thomas Waters and Hannah Lucretia Rogers Cropper. She married Robert L. Ashby on June 3, 1903 in the Manti LDS Temple. He died December 14, 1970.

Mrs. Ashby received the BYU Alumi Distinguished Service Award in 1966, was chosen Mother of the Year, alternate, for the State of Utah in 1968.

She attended Brigham Young Academy and was secretary of the class of 1902. She was a member of the faculty of the BYA Training School, Primary Supervisor of Spanish Fork Schools, taught school in American Fork, Oasis and Lehi and was vice president of BYU Alumni Emeritus Club.

She was a member of American Fork Public Library Board for more than 22 years. She was an officer, member and one of the founders of American Fork Literary Club and member of the Utah Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a member and officer of DUP, president of PTA, member of Utah Poetry Society and National Association of American Penwomen.

Mrs. Ashby had published three volumes of original poetry, she gave numerous complete programs of her poetry and enjoyed writing poetry for special occasions.

Twice Mrs. Ashby was a candidate for the Utah State Legislature and had served as district, precinct and county chairman of the Republican party and as a member of the Utah State Ladies Republican Commitee. She received letters of memendation or citations from three former President of the United States for her political activities.

Very active worker in the LDS Church. she served on a Relief Society Stake Board for 13 years, as president of the ward YWMIA, teacher of many classes of Sunday School, YWMIA and Relief Society. She was a life member of Genealogical Society of Utah.

Mrs. Ashby assisted her husband in pioneering poultry and fur-breeding industries in Utah. She was the mother of 10 children, all of whom are graduates of BYU. One daughter, Mrs. Edwin R. (Althea) Kimball, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sons and five daughters, Mrs. H. Leon (Ruth) Ivie, Orem; Mrs. J. Theodore (Lucretia Arbon, Bountiful; Mrs. E. Wesley (Mary) Porter, Wilmington, Delaware; Dr. Robert M. Ashby, Pasadena, California; William C. Ashby, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Mrs. Sanford M. (Eda) Bingham, Provo; Mrs. Sherman S. (Bonna) Brinton, Salt Lake City; Dr. Armis J. Ashby, Oakland, California; Dr. Richard L. Ashby, Oakland, California; 43 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Willard R. (Georgiana) Johnston, Surora, Sevier County and Mrs. Wilford F. (Lyle) Pratt, Salt Lake City.

Funeral will be Friday at noon, in the American Fork Eighth LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call at Anderson and Sons Mortuary, American Fork, Thursday 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the American Fork Cemetery.
