Lavania Bright died April 26, 2010. She was born to Robert Tilman and Elizabeth Bright at home in Glennwood, Ga., October 23, 1933. She was number five of twelve children.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; two sisters, Bobbie, age 4, and Elizabeth, age 48; and two brothers, Bryant and Ronald.
She left home at age 14 to live with her Aunt in Plant City, Fla. Lavania worked in a frozen food warehouse, then a small diner, going to work at Walgreens Drugs and Restaurants in 1953.
She worked in Tampa and then at Lenox Square in Atlanta, Ga. Later she moved back to Tampa, where she was head fry cook. Walgreens and the people she worked with were her second family. When Walgreens phased out the restaurant part, she retired to be close to her niece and nephew, Tom and Betty Wise, in Crystal River.
Lavania never married nor did she learn to drive; she had a good career and she enjoyed her Walgreens family and her own family very much. She helped support five of her younger brothers and sisters, always buying them whatever they needed for school, especially clothes.
She loved her FAMILY. She never understood why some of them missed family reunions that were held once a year! She was the family historian. She knew family long gone that nobody else kept up with. She loved all people, red, yellow, black or white. She loved gospel music, especially the Gaithers.
In 2001, she had a seizure and that was the start of that dreadful disease, Alzheimer's. She came to live with Tommy and Betty Wise, her niece and nephew, in 2001 where she lived until September 2008, then was moved to Cypress Cove Care Center until she passed away. She attended First Baptist Church of Crystal River, where she was known as Aunt Lavania to those who knew her.
She will be greatly missed by her family and those who loved her. The greatest remembrance for someone is that they loved those around them.
She is survived by two brothers, Grover Bright and wife Sybil of Jonesboro, Ga., and Randy Bright and wife Mary of Molina, Ga.; five sisters, Vedia Todd and husband Bill of Homosassa, Fla., Lillie McCoy of Dallas, Ga., Helen Stanley of Chassahowitzka, Fla., Evie Wall of Thomaston, Ga., and MaryAnn Schumacher and husband Chuck of Allen, TX; 21 nieces and nephews; 37 great-nieces and -nephews; 18 great-great nieces and nephews; and 1 great-great-great-niece.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. from the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Crystal River, Fla., where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Tim Lantzy, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Crystal River, Fla., officiating. Interment will follow at the Crystal River Memorial Park Cemetery in Crystal River, Fla.
