Esaias was considered an educated man because he could read, write and do arithmetic. He contributed much to the early days of the Church and Utah . He built his own home and for many years made furniture, spinning wheels, beds, etc., for the people. He also built many mills including one in Nauvoo . About 1838 , Esaias found some unfortunate Mormons camped in the snow, had compassion for them and invited them to his home. He rented them some property and a house. The man, Alexander Williams , conversed freely about the gospel. Not long after this, Elizabeth became very ill. Mr. Williams gave her a blessing and she was healed. She and Esaias went down to the river and were baptized. Shortly after, in 1839 , Esaias and Mr. Williams were called on a mission to the South where they served in Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee . Esaias later served another mission in Galena . After his first mission, he moved his family to Nauvoo . Shortly after the birth of their sixth child, Elizabeth died.

Upon going to Heber C. Kimball for advice, he was told to give the baby to Sister Thomas Bennett to raise and told to take another wife. His second wife died shortly after the birth of their first child, who also died. He decided to start west. They experienced many problems on the way but eventually made it to the Valley. He kept good records of the things he did. He married twice more. They stayed in Salt Lake for two years before moving to Tooele in 1850 . In 1857 he and Belinda moved to Cache Valley . In 1873 he married for the fourth time. Two years later he was called to help settle St George . Belinda refused to go, so he took his fourth wife and her daughter and two of his sons. He settled on a farm with fruit trees. He was always sad that he didn't have the rest of his family with him. He worked in the temple and did much for the growth of the West with the mills he built and other work he did. He held positions in the community and also the church.
