John Bell was born in Canada and, according to family history, was part Indian. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1830. He married Louisa May in 1848 in New York where their first five children were born. About 1858, the family moved to Allengan County, Michigan, where John raised peaches and grapes to ship to the Chicago markets across Lake Michigan. Seven more children were added to the family. As they got older, John and Louisa lived on the farm with their son, Lewis, and his family.

John Bell died at his old home Tuesday at seven o’clock p.m., aged eighty-four years, having lived in this community forty-nine years. He was born in Canada. Mrs. Bell died about eleven months ago. Twelve children were born to them, ten of whom are living. Father Ryan of Watervliet will conduct the funeral services at the house Friday at 10 o’clock a.m. Burial will be at the McDowell cemetery.
