Emil Lawrence Startz: American spelling is Startz; German spelling is Starz; a descendent of the Starz line from Fachsenfeld, Aalen County, Wurttemberg, Germany. Family pronounced his name A'-mell. Emil was a relatively popular name during the late 1880's; the name Emil is a derivative of the Latin Aemilius of the gens Aemilia.

In addition to his B&W pictures presented here, what did Emil look like? Emil's WWI Draft Registration completed in Caddo County, OK on 9/16/1918: his description at age 33 was described as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, and light hair.

Parents of Emil Lawrence Startz were Louis Charles (Louis' name at birth: Ludwig Carl) Startz and Mary Jane Holman Startz. Louis and Mary are buried at Wallace Creek Cemetery, about 6 miles west of San Saba Texas, west side of FM1030/County Road 311. Louis and Mary were commonly called "Mr LC" and "Mrs LC". Louis Startz was born 9/23/1855 on his father's farm located west of New Braunfels, now Bulverde Texas. Louis died 9/30/1936 in Anadarko, OK at the home of his son Emil Startz. Louis' body was transported down to San Saba for burial. Louis was the youngest son and only child of Johann F. Startz and his third wife Catherine Elizabeth Johanna Wenzel. After Johann and Catherine died January 1858, Louis was raised by his half-brother Heinrich Startz and his wife Louise Artzt. Johann, his previous wife Margaretha Bertsch, and the rest of his family including Heinrich Startz, immigrated through Galveston, Republic of Texas, in 1844. Heinrich was born 11/4/1829 in Germany, died 11/2/1919 in Comal County, TX; and his first wife was Johanne Louise Artzt Startz b.5/23/1838 in Weinsberg, Germany, d.1887 Comal Co., TX. Heinrich and Johanne married 9/6/1853 in New Braunfels, Comal County, TX. The 1870 Comal County TX census included the 15 year-old Louis living with half-brother Heinrich Startz. The 1880 census indicates that Louis was born about Sept. 1855 in Texas, living in precinct 2, Blanco, TX. The 1900 census also indicated Louis was born in Texas.

Louis was raised by his half brother Heinrich. When Louis was about 16 years old, he ran away from the Heinrich family and lived with Joshua and Carolina Holman, and their daughters, in Bastrop County, TX. Louis married Mary Jane Holman, the oldest daughter of the Joshua and Carolina family, on 10/14/1877 in Blanco County, TX (per county marriage data). Louis bought a ranch from a man named Beasley in San Saba County. (Look up Beasley's story in J. Frank Dobe's book "Coronado's Children", 1931). After his children grew up and moved out, one of Louis's sons Charles "Charley" Startz Sr. bought the ranch in San Saba and lived there all his life. Some of Charley Sr. children were born in the rock house that Charlie Sr. and Louis built. Cinda Startz, her husband David Pike Smith, and three children lived in Sab Saba then moved to Beaumont, TX in about 1915. Minnie Startz and her husband Henry Harness had no children and lived in the adjacent town of Burnet, TX; and were buried in the Harness family cemetery west of Burnet (Haven't been able to find the Harness family cemetery) . Jeff Startz, his wife Eva Mae Anderson, and their one daughter Ruth Inez all remained in the San Saba area, and are buried in the Wallace Creek Cemetery . Emil and Charley moved their families to Carnegie, Anadarko, Gracement, and Chickasha areas of Oklahoma in 1917, hoping to take advantage of new ranching opportunities in the Indian territories. Charlie, his wife, one son and one daughter are buried in the Carnegie cemetery. Effie Wade Startz , her husband William Elkin Taylor, had their first few children in San Saba; then eventually settled into farming in Artesia, NM. Effie and William, and a few of their children are buried in Artesia, NM. The grandson of Charley Startz Sr., Mikey Carroll, was kind enough to provide very valuable information he received from his mother, Tessie Bell Startz Carroll, daughter of Charley Startz Sr.

Louis and Mary are buried in Wallace Creek Cemetery about 7 miles southwest of San Saba, Texas; including: their 19 yo son Louis Christopher Startz "L.C. Jr."; their son Jefferson Davis Startz and Jeff's wife Eva Mae Anderson, Jeff's and Eva's only daughter Ruth Inez Startz Dufner, grandson Charlie Jr. and his wife Gerri. There are other Startz related descendants in Wallace Creek. Louis and Mary's son Charley senior and his wife Pope Woods are buried in Sloan Cemetery about 12 miles west of San Saba, TX.

The 1910 census lists a potential daughter Vanna E. Startz born around 1910; suggesting this was referring to Vadena Earline Startz. Clarence's only son: Lawrence Eldon b.1932 d.2002 Fairlawn in Chickasha, OK. Lawrence's sons David and Paul. Tom's sons: Glen Neal, Tommy Cleave, Stephen Lewis, and infant Debbie LaVaughn Jan.4-5,1955. Emil owned orchards and cotton farms in the Anadarko, OK area. He had moved from Anadarko, OK to ALB the previous fall to start again after he lost all of his Oklahoma farms during the great depression.
