Chronicle Independent (Camden, SC) March 11, 2008: Melvin Quinn - Graveside services for Melvin Joseph Quinn, 87, of Elgin, were held Sunday, March 9, at Blaney Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Philip Blankenship and Dennis Ray officiated. Memorials may be made to the Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, S.C. 29045 or the American Cancer Society of Kershaw County, c/o Gail Kirkland, 647 Lachicotte Road, Lugoff, SC 29078. Mr. Quinn died Friday, March 7. He was born in Charlotte, N.C. He was the son of the late Sidney Irvin and Ida Lessie Starnes Quinn. He retired from DuPont. He served his country as a Merchant Marine from 1942 to 1947. He was a member of the James Leroy Belk Post 17 of the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Quinn was a member of Blaney Baptist Church. He also was a cancer survivor. He enjoyed chess, reading, crossword puzzles and photography. Surviving are "the love of his life," his wife of 58 years, Janette Cogdell Quinn; daughters, Connie Ray (Keith) of Lugoff, Nan Sherrill (Archie) of Lugoff, Margaret Quinn of Denver, Colo.; son-in-law, Haskell Rish; grandchildren, Kimberly Taylor, Dennis, Kevin and Scarlett Ray, Meagan and Erin Sherrill; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Wyatt Taylor and Charlie Ray; and sister, Nancy Quinn of Columbia. He was predeceased by a daughter, Marie Quinn Rish and two brothers. Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff-Elgin Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
